PUBLISHED: January 6, 2021 at 3:39 p.m. | UPDATED: January 7, 2021 at 4:12 p.m.

Organizers of a Jan. 18 virtual event honoring Martin Luther King Jr.’s call for racial healing and harmony hope to bring a revival to Redlands amid a pandemic and a racial justice movement that brought marches to the city’s streets. Second Baptist Church of Redlands will hold a solemn assembly on the holiday honoring King. In the Bible such an event was a time when the people of Israel came together to repent and pray on behalf of the whole community, said Bishop Jackie Green, co-pastor of the church. “We will be coming together on behalf of Redlands,” Green said. “We’re calling pastors, church and city leaders, families and worshipers, those who pray, to come together.”

Second Baptist has held many celebrations of Martin Luther King Jr. Day including youth history camps, and partnerships with the University of Redlands on activities, and with the coronavirus pandemic raging, organizers were undeterred.

“We’re going to do it anyway,” Green said. It will just be virtual. Keynote speaker Joshua Beckley, senior pastor at Ecclesia Christian Fellowship in San Bernardino, and a Redlands resident, has done much work on reconciliation and prayer across the Inland area, Green said. “Usually with reconciliation one person shares what it is that took place, whether it was generationally …” she said, “and the other person receives their repentance, it’s a beautiful, beautiful service.” Such acts, she hopes, will lead to “a revival in relationships, a revival where churches will fellowship more.” Green said she also hopes the event can be a model for other cities.

“We’re actually inviting God, His presence, into our city, to help to heal our city of racism,” Green said. The event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. To join in, send an email to TheVillagesBCRedlands@gmail.com for a link to the virtual event. For more information, call 909-793-1074. The University of Redlands, which is partnering on the event, has a slate of other virtual offerings honoring King’s legacy, including a Jan. 18 poetry slam, a Jan. 21 luminaria ceremony, and a service on Jan. 25. Information on those events is available at redlands.edu/mlk.
